ねらい【狙い】

1 〔ねらうこと〕 aim; 〔標的〕 the target; the mark; what one aims [drives] at.

●ねらいが外れる[狂う] 〈人が主語〉 miss one's aim [the mark]; 〈弾･矢などが主語〉 go wide of the mark [target]

・腕が震えてねらいが定まらなかった. I was unable to take steady aim because my hands were shaking.

●ねらいを定める[つける] take aim 《at a deer》; aim 《at the bull's-eye》; zero in 《on an enemy plane》; sight 《one's rifle》

・よくねらいを定める take good [careful, steady] aim 《at…》

・素早くねらいをつける take quick aim 《at…》

・銃のねらいをつける take aim with one's rifle 《at…》; level [point] one's gun 《at…》

●ごみの分別収集を徹底させるというねらいで透明なごみ袋の使用が始まった. The use of clear plastic garbage bags was initiated with the aim of all-out enforcement of itemized garbage collection.

●義務教育のねらいに変化が見られる. A change is apparent in the objectives of compulsory education.

●改正案のねらいをはっきりさせる make clear the purpose of a revised plan.

●市は福祉の充実をねらいとした予算を組んだ. The city drafted a budget aimed at augmenting public welfare.

・この改革案のねらいは正しいが手段が非現実的だ. The aim of the reform plan is correct, but the means is unrealistic.
